Practicing landscape architecture from its studio on the banks of the Miami River in downtown Miami, Florida, Raymond Jungles, Inc. is recognized as a dynamic, creative, award-winning landscape architecture firm.  Founded in 1982, the firm has developed a well-managed and highly productive design team that is focused on providing the highest quality of professional services to its clients on a variety of project types.

The team approach to project management and service insures that all projects receive the highest level of attention and creative design talent.  Each client benefits from the collective process of daily discussion, review and design critique between the principal and the professional design staff.

While highly creative in each of their undertakings, our design staff views design not only as an aesthetic endeavor but also as an intellectual process in which reality-based considerations (materials selection, budget, timeframe, and the like) play an important role in the conceptualization and realization of our projects.  The timely production of work product is viewed as an essential commitment to our clients.  The firm pursues its contractual responsibilities and obligations with the highest degree of efficiency and without compromise to the design.

Raymond Jungles has had a lifelong passion for nature and the out-of-doors. As a boy in Ohio, he gravitated toward hiking, camping, and outdoor sports. His first job was in a landscape nursery. To this day, Raymond loves being on site, marking out a footprint, indicating where trees will soon grow. A can of spray paint and a handful of flags are his true pencil.
Raymond’s interest in design and architecture developed after moving to Florida in 1974. Landscape Architecture ultimately offered the ideal fusion of his talents. While attending the University of Florida, he was introduced to the work of the Brazilian artist and landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, whose book, the “Tropical Gardens of Roberto Burle Marx,” opened Raymond’s eyes to the poetry of landscape design.

The master and student became friends when Burle Marx lectured at UF in 1979, and a lasting mentorship ensued.

After graduating with honors, Raymond Jungles founded his own design/build practice in Miami. He traveled often to Brazil to visit Burle Marx who led him throughout that country to see many of his projects. Burle Marx also opened his studio and estate to Raymond and, later, invited him to design and construct the columnar bromeliad sculpture for his 1991 Museum of Modern Art exhibition in New York.

A Jungles garden is recognizable for its botanical richness and naturalism. Kevin Boyett, president of the Florida Chapter, ASLA, described Raymond’s “inherent compassion for the natural landscape, in both its aesthetic context and horticultural integrity. Through the use of native plant species in combination with the subtropical aesthetic, he creates projects, places, and spaces that comfort the human psyche and raise the human spirit.” In addition, Jungles’ gardens are identifiable for their inclusion of water features such as pools, fountains, waterfalls, ponds, and lakes, exemplifying Raymond belief that water is the mirror to the universe, and the heart and soul of any garden.

Raymond Jungles’ firm is primarily known for private residential gardens, however they have also designed landscapes for communities, resort hotels, and numerous botanical gardens.  Raymond Jungles, Inc. has designed civic landscapes, collaborating with Herzog and de Meuron on 1111 Lincoln Road and with Frank Gehry and Partners on the New World Symphony’s new campus, both in Miami Beach.  Most projects are located in the Florida and Caribbean region.

A frequent lecturer, Raymond has twice been selected as a member of the Design Awards Jury for the Broward County, Florida, American Institute of Architects Society. He is the recipient of twenty-nine Design Awards from the Florida Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects, including thirteen Awards of Excellence and four Frederic B. Stressau Awards. Raymond has also received a Professional Award from the National Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects and was elected a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects in 2006.  He was named Most Distinguished Alumni in 2000 by the University of Florida.  In 2003, he was honored as the Miami Chapter of the American Institute of Architects Landscape Architect of the Year.

Raymond Jungles’ projects have been featured in more than thirty books, including his first monograph “Ten Landscapes” published by Rockport Press in 1999. His second monograph, “The Colors of Nature: Subtropical Gardens by Raymond Jungles” was published in 2008 by Monacelli Press. He has been profiled in the New York Times’ Design section, and his work has appeared in nearly 30 national and international publications.

Our passion lies in the exploration of a set of ideas by which we aim to better understand the relationship between the natural and built environment. Each individual project, whether large or small, becomes a research tool that allows us to further investigate and shape our approach and attitude towards the profession of Landscape Architecture.

Viewing Landscape Architecture as an art form that is applied through the principles of ecology, botany, environmentalism, architecture, culture and art in general inspires us to generate the creative energy and tools necessary to build unique botanically rich landscapes.  Evidenced through our commitment to sustainable design and development, we strive to contribute to the structure of the natural systems that sustain us all.

MIAMI, FL.  Miami-based Landscape Architecture firm, Raymond Jungles, Inc. is pleased to announce two awards from the Florida Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (FLASLA) in the Institutional and Residential Design Categories.  The FLASLA Professional Awards Program encourages the advancement, expansion, and recognition of the profession.

The Award of Excellence in the Institutional Design Category was awarded to the 2009 New York Botanical Garden Orchid Show: Brazilian Modern.  The Award of Excellence is bestowed in recognition of a project that demonstrates the inspired use of Landscape Architectural practices in an imaginative combination that adds to the body of the Landscape Architecture profession, and is truly exceptional, unique, innovative, and goes beyond achieving its defined purpose.

The Award of Merit in the Residential Design Category was awarded to the Davids Garden.  The Award of Merit is bestowed in recognition of a project that demonstrates a thorough use of landscape architectural practices.

GARDENOVATION: Pecha-Kucha Presentation @ Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden’s Food and Garden Festival.

Raymond Jungles, Inc. will be presenting a Pecha-Kucha presentation to display how our work creatively challenges traditional ideas about garden design, technique, and interaction with nature. Nature has inspired Raymond Jungles, Inc. in their work, and in return, has allowed us to learn about our own nature in the process.

Please contact Amanda Jungles, amanda@raymondjungles.com for more information.

Saturday, March 13th, 2010 10 AM – 3 PM

The Browning Residence is on the Miami Beach Botanical Garden: 2010 Tour of Miami Beach Gardens!

When Raymond Jungles was brought into the project, the owners intention was to integrate their Mediterranean style house, designed by architect Zeb Jarosz, into the property, with the garden as the interface between the interior and exterior.  Privacy was desired on the south end of the property, which is adjacent to a public park.  The house, grand in scale and lacking vegetation, needed to be blended into the neighborhood.  Many native plants, including rare palms, were used to create habitat.  The garden was created in keeping with the contemporary interiors, designed by architect Rene Gonzalez, while respecting the proportion and scale of the home.  There is an unexpected contemporary twist to the design of all the hardscape elements, from the pool detailing to the fountains and planters.  A favorite place in the garden is the side entrance off of the main parking area.  Here, a private meditation garden floats alongside the home, which allows the owners to have the best entry experience possible.
